The first Interprofessional Education (IPE) activity of the QU Health Interprofessional Education Committee in Qatar focused on diabetes and was virtually held on 20 October via WebEx and Microsoft Teams.
With over 115 Qatar University students from various medical fields and 18 facilitators from Qatar University, University of Calgary-Qatar, and Weill Cornell University-Qatar, the IPE activity aims to communicate the role and responsibility of healthcare students from different professions.
Moreover, it highlights a very significant topic for the healthcare system, i.e. Diabetes. It is among the leading causes of mortality worldwide. While in Qatar, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is about 17%; one of the highest prevalence rates in the world.

Students were initially asked to introduce themselves and their professions during the IPE activity and then discussed a case study about a 46 years old man who was diagnosed with Diabetic ketoacidosis.
The students discussed the patient’s present illness and their past medical history. Students worked in collaboration with professionals to study his lab test results and their interpretations, established his treatment plan, and finally developed an interprofessional discharge plan.
It provided students with an opportunity to enhance their learning experience and prepare them for a collaborative practice after graduation. With an emphasis on communication skills and teamwork capabilities, the IPE event communicated its importance in a working environment.
Many students expressed their delight in being able to participate in the virtual IPE activity. The IPE activities develop and facilitate interactions between healthcare students equipping learners with team-based collaborative skills and emphasizing interactive learning.
