Qatar University’s (QU’s) College of Engineering (QU-CENG) launched the Qatar Digital Project and saw the participation of specialists from Qatar and International experts in the field of two-dimensional surveying.

Sponsored by Dolphin Energy Limited, remote drones were incorporated for aerial photography for the purposes of three-dimensional aerial surveying at Qatar University.

According to Hassan Al-Emadi, General Manager at Dolphin Energy, investing in modern technologies will not only be of great value to the university’s faculty, students, and experts, it will also help provide a digital infrastructure that will drive cultural change.

“Digital transformation is now a strategic imperative and we hope that this initiative will provide opportunities to practice enhanced technological innovation and implement business solutions in an efficient manner,” he added.

The project also supports obtaining real dimensions of the infrastructure with an accuracy of 3-4 cm, which is considered a high-quality figure in aerial surveying, noting that the results of the aerial surveying will be used to convert the photographed facilities into three-dimensional digital models.

QU-CENG Dean and project supervisor Dr. Khaled Kamal Naji said, "The project comes to introduce the mechanisms of aerial surveying and to invest in modern technologies through the use of remote drones to capture high-quality aerial images of Qatar University for the purposes of three-dimensional surveying."

"The project works to provide a high-quality digital model for Qatar University in three dimensions that facilitate the process of maintaining facilities within the university, linking them with facilities management systems, and providing three-dimensional maps for all faculty and students, and a large number of future applications," he added.

This can then be connected with engineering building modeling systems, also known as BIM. This connection and conversion to three-dimensional models is the first important step towards the digital transformation policy.

It is a policy pursued by the State of Qatar where all infrastructures in the country will be converted into digital models to facilitate the process of linking these three-dimensional models with building and facility management and maintenance systems in the future.

Training has been provided to a group of specialized engineers and technicians to use these modern technologies at the College of Engineering at Qatar University. Qatar University recognizes the ‘Digital Qatar’ initiative as a crucial project in their digital transformation journey.
