As relevant authorities in Qatar continue to urge people to stay home and practice social distancing to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), most work is now being carried out through virtual communication technology.

Internationally, Qatar continues to join important meetings through video conferencing.

Locally, several important activities and processes have been moved online including remote healthcare services, distant learning, among others.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Interior (MOI) confirmed that court trials, which are being run through visual communication system, are proceeding well.

Actual trials under this method were held at the headquarters of the Court of Appeal in Lusail, the Ministry stated.

Vice-President of the Court of Appeal, Judge Ali bin Khamis Al Sulaiti, underlined that the remote trial system has been successfully set up through coordination between the Supreme Judicial Council and MOI.

The system facilitates procedures for hearing of cases to continue without interruption while also meeting the required social distancing guidelines.

Under the system, the accused remains in the detention center while the judges attend the sessions, Al Sulaiti pointed out, adding that all guarantees for the detainees are ensured just like regular trials.

The First Prosecutor, Abdulrahman Al Mohannadi highlighted that the remote litigation technology is a successful step and contributes greatly to save time and effort.

Given the current COVID-19 scenario, the system also complements the precautionary measures put in place to curb the spread of the infection.

Al Mohannadi mentioned that the new system has been introduced to the Public Prosecution already.

From the next session, the Public Prosecutor will not have to attend the courtroom, but will remain in his office and communication between him and the court and the accused will be made via video, the official explained.

Last week, MOI also confirmed that it has been utilizing all its resources and capabilities in the fight against COVID-19. The Ministry has started using advanced technology to broadcast important awareness messages as well as monitor the adherence to required safety measures.

Meanwhile, health authorities in the country continue to implement the highest level of monitoring, detection, and management procedures to deal with the virus, the public has been advised to follow certain measures to safeguard their health.

For any queries, or concerns related to COVID-19 in Qatar, the public can contact a 24/7 hotline set up by the Ministry. The hotline number is 16000 and is toll-free.

Here's everything you need to know about the virus, including ways to protect yourself.
