Under an ambitious expansion plan to advance women’s health in Qatar, Sidra Medicine has launched a one-of-a-kind Adult Pain Clinic for women.

The clinic offers treatment for different kinds of chronic pain conditions in women such as the pain experienced post-cesarean section or operative pain, pelvic pain, knee, shoulder or neck pain, among others.

“We are the first one in Qatar to open a pain clinic for women with specialization for pelvic pain. Women outweigh men in pain as they suffer more from a condition called fibromyalgia,” Dr Sandeep Kulkarni, a senior attending physician at the clinic said.

Staffed by highly-trained pain management specialists, the clinic offers thorough, individualized assessment and care to patients with different pain conditions.

“We conduct a full examination to help determine the cause of the pain. We discuss the available treatment options with patients so that they can decide on the one that best suits them. It is our multi-disciplinary clinic approach that makes healthcare at Sidra Medicine stand out,” Dr Kulkarni added.

The clinic offers a host of treatment plans such as injection by guided X-rays, cognitive behavioral therapy, physiotherapy, ultrasound, and advanced pain interruption techniques, according to Dr Monzer Sadek, the division chief of Anesthesiology at Sidra Medicine.

He added that pelvic pain can be intolerable and requires additional pain management procedures such as physiotherapy other than the treatment.

The patients at the Adult Pain Clinic are referred internally but the clinic also accommodates external referrals from other clinics and general practitioners.

According to Dr Timothy Pavy, senior attending physician at the clinic the response to the new service has been very encouraging with the number of visitors increasing.

The clinic is available to adult females above 18 years of age and is not meant for cancer patients, palliative care patients or those with a history of drug abuse.

Other services under Sidra Medicine’s strategic expansion plan over the year include an expanded postpartum unit with new deluxe rooms and suites, opening of outpatient evening clinics for obstetrics and gynecology services, and starting cervical screenings.

Sidra Medicine also said it will launch a state-of-the-art IVF facility as well as push forward its technological advances in minimally invasive gynecology surgery.
