More than four months after the start of the blockade on Qatar, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has started another tour of the Gulf region to try and resolve the crisis.

He praised the role played by Kuwait ‘to diplomatically seek a resolution’ to the ongoing Gulf crisis, according to the Kuwait News Agency.

Tillerson’s statement came on the eve of his second visit to the region in recent months as he seeks a breakthrough in the diplomatic crisis gripping the Gulf.

Speaking at a gala dinner for UNHCR, hosted by Kuwait's ambassador to the US Sheikh Salem Al Sabah, US President Donald Trump also thanked the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah for all that he is doing in the region, saying “there’s a lot of things happening in the Middle East.”

Trump has called for mediation and recently predicted a rapid end to the Gulf crisis.

Meanwhile, Tillerson arrived in Riyadh on Saturday to attend a landmark meeting between officials from Saudi Arabia and Iraq aimed at improving relations between the two countries and countering Iran’s growing regional influence, reported Reuters.

He will then also travel to Qatar, Pakistan, India and Switzerland.
Tillerson is hell bent on making progress in the quest for ending the Qatar blockade. But his first attempt, in July, had not been successful.

It prompted the official to comment that the Saudi Arabia-led bloc was not doing anything much to end the ongoing Gulf crisis.

“I don’t have a lot of expectations for it being resolved anytime soon,” he had said earlier.
