If you have been in Qatar long enough, you should have seen the dangerous pastime of ‘drifting’ being performed by youngsters on Qatar’s roads.

It is both reckless and dangerous and authorities in the country have tried for long to put an end to it. But it continues unchecked. However, they are now hoping to put their foot down on the menace.

The General Directorate of Traffic has warned youngsters against drifting and reckless driving and said that the violation, if caught, would lead to their vehicles being confiscated for three month, reported The Peninsula.

“The vehicles of the violators and stunt-drivers are seized in case of violating the law and this confiscation of vehicle will be for a maximum period of three months,” said an official in Qatar’s Traffic Directorate.

The punishment will also include hefty fines which may reach up to QR3,000. Cases of repeated violations will be transferred to public prosecution.

“In case the driver indulged in drifting destroys public properties, they must pay the cost of the loss occurred. For examples if the driver make a damage to the road, the Public Works Authority Ashghal will take legal action against them and the General Directorate of Traffic will transfer his case to Ashghal to register a complaint in the court”, he added.

Residents can send pictures of violators and the investigation section will follow them, the official added.

The difficulty faced by the officials to control such reckless driving behaviour is the fact that stunt-drivers choose places which are far from the eyes of the police.
