Dhows are the name given to traditional sailing boats in Qatar. They are made of wood and comprise of lateen sails which are mounted on the mast at a slanting angle and triangular in shape.
Not so long ago, these dhows were used by fishermen, pearl divers and merchants to earn a living. Every morning these men would set out on the dhows in search of their livelihood, and return in the evening with fish, pearls or various goods that they would sell and then feed their families with whatever they earned.
Times have changed now, and bigger boats and ships have taken their place. Today, these dhows are mostly used for recreation and as tourist attractions. The Corniche in Doha is dotted with dhows. You can take rides in them or enjoy a delicious meal as it cruises along the Corniche.
These dhows are part of the rich cultural heritage of Qatar. They are a legacy passed down by our forefathers and link the people of Qatar with the beautiful Arabian Sea that was once home to these beautiful dhows.
Next time you're at the Corniche, why not hop on one of these tradition dhows for a ride around the bay and remember the Bedouin tradition of the yesteryear.
