Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Ashghal) achieved major sustainability milestones across its building projects since 2022 by implementing an integrated system for managing, reusing, and recycling construction and demolition waste.
The initiative has improved resource efficiency, reduced waste generation, and promoted circular economy principles in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy.
As part of its sustainability efforts, Ashghal has reused or transferred approximately 2.5 million cubic metres of excavation materials to the recycling yards of the Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC). The authority has also recycled more than 300,000 tonnes of construction and demolition waste.
In addition, Ashghal reused around 80,000 tonnes of timber waste within project sites, while sending 7,000 tonnes of plastic waste, 3,000 tonnes of paper waste, and 1,000 tonnes of scrap metal to approved recycling facilities.
The authority also recovered nearly 8,000 tonnes of food waste by converting it into organic compost or processing it at dedicated treatment facilities.
Ashghal said these achievements reflect its commitment to sustainable construction practices, enhancing environmental performance, and supporting Qatar’s long-term development and circular economy objectives.
