Lawyer Aisha Al Maadeed Wins Appeal and Secures Client's Acquittal on Government Employee Impersonation Charge

Lawyer Aisha Al Maadeed has won an appeal that resulted in her client being acquitted of several charges, including impersonating a government employee.

According to the case details, the Public Prosecution had brought four charges against the defendant.

The charges included claiming to be a public employee and carrying out an act falling within the authority of the employee whose position he was accused of impersonating.

He was also accused of forging an official document issued by a government entity by altering its written content and image, as well as using the forged document while knowing it had been falsified.

The fourth charge concerned knowingly accepting a counterfeit financial instrument that had previously been passed in good faith.

The Court of First Instance had sentenced the defendant to one year in prison in connection with the related charges and ordered the confiscation of the seized forged document.

It also sentenced him to one month in prison and a QAR 3,000 fine over the counterfeit financial instrument charge, ordered confiscation of the counterfeit item and ruled that he be deported after completing the imposed sentence.

The defendant appealed the judgment on the grounds of incorrect application of the law, flawed reasoning and insufficient justification.

His legal representative, Aisha Al Maadeed, a Court of Cassation lawyer, submitted a legal memorandum supported by arguments and evidence challenging the charges against him.

In its reasoning, the Court of Appeal found that the case files did not establish that the defendant had at any point claimed to be a public employee or used the seized documents in that capacity.

The court also found that the seized paper and equipment, including a radio device, were insufficient to establish the relevant allegations.

The Court of Appeal therefore overturned the lower court's ruling on a number of charges and acquitted the defendant of them.
