As much as today's highly-competitive job market is about presenting your best self as a potential employee, it is also about getting noticed by the right people.
How do you do that when there are hundreds of applicants for one job? How do you make yourself stand out and be seen?
One of the ways in which you can achieve this purpose is to make the best use of online networking.
If you're on a professional social network, you'd see tons of people wanting to connect with you every week. Take a moment and think about the ones you strike off your list instantly to those you accept to connect with.
The key is the right approach in making your online professional connections. Just like any skill, online networking takes a bit of practice in order to conquer it like a pro.
Here are 6 tips to help you navigate the world of online networking successfully:
1. Put your best foot forward
This is the first time you present yourself to the professional you're connecting with. Make sure you make a great first impression. Be courteous and begin with a polite greeting.
Do not jump straight from "Dear Mr. XYZ..I am looking to work in your firm." This is a total no-no.
Be respectful and allow the person some time to get to know you. In the first instance, always start with "Dear Mr. so-and-so. Hope you're well. My name is..."
Remember the way you initiate your conversation can mean the difference between a response and a deleted invitation.
2. Mention a common connection
When you approach people to connect with, begin with telling them what you may have in common— this could be anything including hometown, alma mater, previous employers, clubs or organizations, volunteering or causes, etc.
By touching upon whatever common ground you share with an invitee will help build rapport and gives them a reason to connect with you.
Relevant professional connections are best because they also offer some implied credibility, but even personal connections can at least be a conversation starter.

3. Offer a kind word
Letting the invitee know that you aren't just wishing to connect with them because of their high position at the company is very important. Make sure you communicate in a way that reveals you took the time to study their profile.
You may then compliment them on their strong portfolio/career journey/accomplishments. This is not meant to be disingenuous. You might try something like, “I find your work inspiring! I would love to learn more about your career.”
4. Clearly communicate why you're reaching out
Once you feel that you have clearly introduced yourself and kick-started the conversation, the pivotal moment is to let them know what exactly you're looking for.
While some people may straight out ask for a meeting, it is important to maintain that initial comfort level. Perhaps, a better way to go around this is to ask for their email to share your resume with them.
Then, you may add the simple phrase, “If you would be willing to have a conversation by e-mail or phone, I would be so grateful.”
Now, the invitee has the opportunity to contact you and pave the way to an informational or exploratory interview.
5. Keep the lines of communication open
Be sure you've clearly let your online contact know the different ways to contact you. Share with them your email and mobile number. Also, let them know you would be willing to participate in a video conference call if you're based outside of the region they are in.

6. Finish strong and don't forget to follow-up
Thank the invitee for their time and let them know you look forward to hearing from them soon. Sign your name, first and last, and click send.
Don't forget to follow-up after a few days. Remember, your new connection may not be able to help you as you wish, but at least you give it a shot.
Good luck! Taking the first step toward a new job or career that starts with building a professional network.
