The enigmatic dhow boat shaped Al Janoub Stadium located in the southern city of Al Wakrah, was awarded a gold standard Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) certification for operational performance by the Gulf Organization for Research & Development (GORD). Previously, the stadium has also been awarded certifications for sustainable design and green construction.
Representatives from the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), FIFA, GORD, and Mosanada Facilities Management Services were invited to an award ceremony to celebrate this accomplishment. Dr. Yousef Alhorr, Founding Chairman at GORD emphasized how Janoub Stadium made it to be the first FIFA World Cup stadium to be awarded all three GSAS certifications. “The project has gone through due diligence all the way from preparation and design through to the construction and post-occupancy phase. This would not have been possible without the keen interest and commitment of the SC and FIFA.”, He added.

“This certification is evidence of our efforts to deliver on the commitments of the FIFA World Cup 2022 Sustainability Strategy. We are proud to be the first FIFA World Cup host country that is conducting these detailed assessments of our stadiums’ operations.” said Bodour Al Meer, SC Sustainability Director.

Federico Addiechi, FIFA's Head of Sustainability & Environment claimed that acquiring a green building certification for the stadium operations was a voluntary decision by Qatar, which they actively supported from the start.
They trust that this is a wonderful standard that should be implemented not just to all stadiums in Qatar 2022, but also to other venues in future FIFA World Cups.
