Colombian midfielder Mateus Uribe’s 118th-minute strike helped ten-man Al Sadd beat Qatar SC 1-0 and lift the Amir Cup title for a record-extending 19th time at the Education City Stadium on Friday.

He slotted the ball in the left corner of the net after substitute Pedro Miguel’s initial attempt ricocheted off a defender. Al Sadd thus celebrated their first Amir Cup title in three years, after losing in the final in the previous two editions.

Sadd, who last month regained the Qatar Stars League title, completed a season double, which is also their 79th title overall.

The defeat ended Qatar SC’s dream run in the tournament. The team, coached by Youssef Al Noubi, had reached the Amir Cup final after a long 20-year wait.

Following a tightly contested first half, Sadd hit the woodwork thrice in the second. But Qatar SC hung on to take the game to extra time.

Sadd showed their dominance from early on, applying relentless pressure on Qatar SC’s defence. Qatar SC attempted to counter Al Sadd’s offensive, but it was tough going.

Despite numerous opportunities, regular time ended goalless and it led to extra time. The match took a dramatic turn when Akram Afif received a red card for a challenge on Bruno Tabata in the 107th, following a review by the video assistant referee.

“The Amir Cup title was a priority for me, and it’s like a dream come true. It was a collective effort, and I want to thank my teammates for their hard work in achieving this victory,” Sadd’s all-time top scorer Baghdad Bounedjah, who played his last game for the club yesterday, was quoted as saying by Gulf Times.

Sadd coach Wesam Rizk was emotional.

“From the beginning, my main target was winning the Amir Cup, and I’m delighted to lift the trophy and complete a double. The players put in their best to win the final. Overall, it was a collective effort from the entire team,” he said.
