Qatar’s national men’s tennis team has earned promotion to the 2027 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group III after defeating Kyrgyzstan 2–1 in a dramatic promotion play-off in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The tie was decided in the final doubles match after the two countries split the opening singles contests. Brothers Mubarak and Mousa Shanan completed Qatar’s victory with a three-set comeback against Kyrgyzstan’s Kirill Kistanov and Mirgiiaz Mirdzhaliev.

Mubarak Shanan starts Qatar’s comeback

Mubarak Shanan gave Qatar an important early advantage in the first singles match against Kistanov.

The Qatari player lost the opening set 3–6 but responded strongly, taking control of the match to win the following sets 6–1 and 6–2.

His comeback handed Qatar a 1–0 lead in the promotion play-off and moved the team within one victory of reaching Group III.

Kyrgyzstan then levelled the tie when Mirdzhaliev defeated Mousa Shanan 6–3, 6–2 in the second singles match, sending the contest into a decisive doubles encounter.

Shanan brothers seal promotion in decisive doubles match

Mubarak and Mousa Shanan faced Kistanov and Mirdzhaliev in the final match of the tie.

The Kyrgyzstan pair claimed the opening set 6–4, placing Qatar under immediate pressure. The Shanan brothers recovered to win the second set 6–3 before securing the final set 6–2.

Their comeback completed a 2–1 victory for Qatar and secured the country’s promotion from Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group IV to Group III for the 2027 season.

Qatar recovers from opening defeat

Qatar began the Asia/Oceania Group IV competition with a narrow 2–1 defeat against tournament host Sri Lanka.

The national team recovered in its second pool match, defeating the Northern Mariana Islands 2–1. That victory allowed Qatar to finish second in its pool and advance to the crossover promotion play-offs.

Qatar faced Kyrgyzstan after the latter topped its four-team group with three victories from three ties.

Under the competition format, the seven participating nations were divided into two pools. The first and second-placed teams advanced to promotion play-offs, with the two winning countries earning places in the 2027 Asia/Oceania Group III competition.

Qatar squad prepared in Thailand

Qatar’s squad for the tournament included Mubarak Shanan, Mousa Shanan and Jabor Al Mutawa.

Before travelling to Sri Lanka, the team completed a two-week training camp in Thailand focusing on its technical and physical preparations for the competition.

Khalid Al Khulaifi, a board member of the Qatar Tennis, Squash, Padel and Badminton Federation, praised the players’ performances and said the team had represented Qatar strongly throughout the tournament.

Qatar returns to Davis Cup Group III

Promotion marks an important result for Qatar’s national tennis programme after the team narrowly missed out at the same stage of the 2025 Asia/Oceania Group IV competition.

The victory over Kyrgyzstan gives Qatar the opportunity to compete at a higher regional level in 2027, where the national team will face stronger opposition and pursue further progress through the Davis Cup structure.
