Intending to deliver a carbon-neutral World Cup, Qatar has planned to deploy over 3,000 buses that act according to the global specifications of environmental protection. With the influx of tourists that are expected in the country, these eco-friendly buses will ferry fans around town, out of which 25 percent are going to be electric buses.
“These buses will serve all segments including media persons, workforce, and fans. Free transportation will be provided to the fans holding match tickets in vital areas such as central Doha and areas surrounding the stadiums,” Mobility Director at Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) Thani Al Zarraa.
It is believed that the electric buses have already been tested on various occasions, including the recent FIFA Arab cup, the Amir Cup 2021, and even the opening of the Al Thumama Stadium.
“We have used or tested about one-third of the total of 3,000 buses which will be used during FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022,” said Al Zarraa. “These buses are being delivered regularly in batches as they are being manufactured and shipped to Qatar. All buses are expected to be delivered by the end of the first quarter (Q1) of 2022,” he further added.
The buses come in various sizes including 8-seater minis, 20 and 36 seaters, that will be utilized in different areas as per the need of fans. The shuttle bus service is expected to be active on Corniche street, in addition to the services on the B and C ring roads. Fans will find these buses carrying them to some vital areas across towns whereas the express bus service will take them to the stadiums.
The entire plan has been carefully curated to make sure that the public transport system connects the tourist/main areas of the country from northern Qatar to southern Qatar, including areas like Al Wukhair and Al Wakra.
“As we promised that FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will be unique as it will be held first time in the Middle East so it will be from various aspects including providing eco-friendly transportation,” said Al Zarraa.
