Anthropic announced the launch of a tool that detects AI-generated narratives.
The company explained that its new Cloud models will place an imperceptible watermark directly into AI-generated text – the very text the tool aims to detect. The watermark does not alter the meaning or readability of the text but is transferred when copied and pasted. It is a light pattern or text embedded in images or digital documents to help establish ownership and prevent copying or theft. Anthropic stated that this move aligns with its commitment to transparency under the European Union's AI law.
Cloud models launched earlier this month or later will support the watermarking feature from their launch date, and Anthropic says it is working to add this functionality to older models. These watermarks will be applied to Cloud-generated content worldwide, including when accessed via cloud service providers. The company also plans to provide third parties with tools to detect these watermarks.
Watermarking AI-generated content is a significant step and a turning point for the publishing industry, which has struggled to deal with AI-generated material. Last month, an agent withdrew support for the popular crime novel "Call Me, I'll Hide the Body" after concerns arose about the author's potential use of AI. Fourteen publishers had submitted bids for the rights, and a deal was struck before the agent apologized. The author, Jerry Valady, denied using AI in the novel.
Earlier this year, Hachette withdrew Mia Ballard's horror novel "Shy Girl" following allegations of AI use. Ballard denied using AI, stating that a freelance editor had inserted AI-generated material without her direct knowledge.
Cloud's new watermark could give publishers, schools, and universities another way to investigate such cases and make it more difficult for individuals to present AI-generated writing as their own.
Anthropic noted that extensive editing, paraphrasing, translation, or blending of Claude's output with other writings can make his watermark undetectable, a mark that cannot prove that Claude originally authored something, especially since proofreading or translation using AI leaves a mark.
