Ashghal (Public Works Authority) is deploying its Road Management Center in a bid to monitor and ensure an efficient traffic flow during FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. This will be done by supporting the Temporary Traffic Control Center (TTCC) for monitoring.

The Operation Leader (Manager) at Ashghal, Eng. Abdullah Al Qahtani spoke to Qatar Radio and expresses how the Public Works Authority is ready for the World Cup. He remarked that the Road Management Center will be connected to the TTCC for swift monitoring of the road situation and real-time response to changes in traffic plans. This plan also includes the installation of advanced CCTV cameras and electronic traffic signboards to guide traffic and fans to the stadiums.

Al Qahtani also revealed that Ashghal has coordinated with the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), Kahrama (Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation), and Qatar Rail to ensure they all can operate efficiently to welcome fans during the global tournament.

Speaking of Ashghal’s operational role in hosting the World Cup, he adds that they have timed it out into three-phased action plans that will be implemented before, during, and after the World Cup.

Before the event, and post-announcement of the match dates, the Ashghal team has surveyed all the roads surrounding the eight stadiums and will continue to do it right before the tournament starts. The move includes checking the quality of roads, signages, safety barriers, traffic signals, pedestrian walks, drainage systems, and street lighting. This is followed by the requisite maintenance works where needed.

Additionally, all road closures and diversions were surveyed to find alternative routes for drivers during the sporting events. The second phase plan during the World Cup will include electronic road signboards usage to steer fans onto the best routes to reach parking areas and stadiums.

Ashghal also plans to set up a control room connected to the TTCC to provide regular updates of changes in traffic plans. The signals will be controlled through advanced CCTV cameras to ensure smooth traffic flow during matches.
