Anybody who has travelled through the Al Wakrah Road should have thought at least once about the urgent need for an upgrade to it.

And now, it seems things are moving solidly in that direction. Yesterday, Ashghal announced the commencement of upgrade works of the 9.2km Al Wakrah Main Road at an approximate cost of QR600m, reported Gulf Times.

The project is part of plans to complete road networks in Qatar’s southern areas following the recent openings of G-Ring Road, southern part of Doha Express Highway, Hamad Port Road and the Orbital Road, which is fast nearing completion.

The road works will stretch from the Airport Interchange on G-Ring Road to Mesaieed Road and Waab Behair Intersection in the Southern Part of Doha Express Highway.

The roads will be widened to three lanes to accommodate 6,000 vehicles per hour in each direction, providing free flowing traffic and reduction of travel time from Doha to Al Wakrah, reported The Peninsula.

The project will involve the construction of four new intersections and upgrading of existing roundabouts to signal-controlled intersections. A tunnel will also be burrowed to assist with free-flowing traffic in both directions.

The project will also see construction of bicycle and pedestrian paths running for a length of 6.1km from the airport interchange to Ras Bufuntas Train Station.

The project’s first stage will begin at the Barwa village to Al Wakrah Road and Ras Bufentas station. The construction works will extend over 1.8km. The first stage will also include 840M of subways north of Al Wakrah Main Road, reported Qatar Tribune.

The second stage will extend from former Al Wakrah Roundabout up until Pearl Roundabout. Road works extend for approximately 1.9kms. It will include three lanes in each direction and a tunnel that extends for about 160M and located under the main Al Wakrah Rail Station.

The third stage starts about 1km before Pearl Roundabout and extends up to Woqod Petrol Station located towards the city of Mesaieed.

The 5.5km road from Al Wakrah will see the conversion of three major roundabouts — Pearl Roundabout, Ooredoo Roundabout and Wadi Afja Roundabout — into signal-controlled intersections.

Traffic diversions

As is the case with any major construction works, there will be a host of traffic diversions in place. In this case, Ashghal has announced that traffic will be closed for road users going to Doha from Al Meshaf and Al Wukair areas beginning Saturday, October 27, until the first quarter of 2020.

From Al Meshaf and Al Wukair

Road users can take left a turn at the signalised intersection of Saud Bin Abdelrahman Street & Al Wakrah Parallel road towards Doha and HIA.

From Fahes Al Wakra & Woqod petrol station

In order to reach Doha and the HIA, vehicles can turn right at the junction near Woqod petrol station and make a U-turn at Al Sadafa Roundabout. Speed will remain at 50kph along the route.
