Marvel Studios has officially announced Black Panther 3, confirming that filmmaker Ryan Coogler will return to direct the next chapter in the Wakanda-set superhero franchise.
The announcement was made during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where British actor David Jonsson was introduced as the new Black Panther.
The film is scheduled to arrive exclusively in cinemas on December 15, 2028.
David Jonsson takes on the Black Panther mantle
Jonsson appeared on stage alongside Coogler, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, Letitia Wright and Winston Duke during the Comic-Con presentation.
The actor will portray the son of T’Challa, the character previously played by the late Chadwick Boseman. T’Challa’s son was introduced during the closing scenes of the 2022 film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Jonsson is known for his performances in the television series Industry and films including Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk.
His casting marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Black Panther character as Marvel continues the royal family’s story in Wakanda.
Ryan Coogler returns to direct the third film
Ryan Coogler, who directed both previous Black Panther films, will return for the third instalment.
Coogler helped establish Wakanda as one of the most recognisable locations in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with the original Black Panther film in 2018.
The filmmaker also directed Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which followed the people of Wakanda as they dealt with the death of King T’Challa and faced a new threat from the underwater kingdom of Talokan.
Marvel has not yet revealed detailed plot information for the third film or announced its complete cast.
However, the presence of Letitia Wright and Winston Duke during the announcement indicates that the characters of Shuri and M’Baku remain closely connected to the franchise’s future.
A new chapter following Wakanda Forever
The first Black Panther film became one of Marvel Studios’ most commercially and critically successful releases.
It earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide and became the first superhero film to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
Following Chadwick Boseman’s death in 2020, Marvel decided not to recast the adult T’Challa in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The sequel instead focused on Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, as she confronted her grief and eventually assumed the Black Panther mantle.
The film’s closing sequence revealed that T’Challa and Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o, had a young son named Toussaint. The child also revealed that his Wakandan name was T’Challa, establishing a possible future successor.
Marvel’s Comic-Con announcement now confirms that the younger T’Challa will play a central role in the future of the franchise.
Black Panther 3 release date confirmed
Black Panther 3 is scheduled for release on December 15, 2028.
The film was one of several major projects presented during Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con showcase, alongside announcements involving Avengers: Doomsday and a new Ghost Rider film.
Further details about the story, supporting cast and production schedule are expected to be announced closer to the film’s release.
