Under its efforts to enhance road connectivity in Qatar, the Public Works Authority, Ashghal, announced the opening of the first underpass at the Mesaimeer Interchange yesterday.

The 220-meter long underpass provides a free exit for road users heading toward Rawdat Al Khail Street from the E-Ring Road.

The new underpass is the first of nine underpasses that make up the vital junction, with a capacity of 1,500 vehicles per hour.

The Mesaimeer Interchange is slated to open in the second quarter of 2020. The new underpass is the first achievement at the Interchange as it is ready for use six months ahead of the planned date with a completion of 65% of junction works, according to Project engineer Hassan Al Ghanim.

"The [frist] underpass connects traffic flow from E Ring road toward Rawdhat Al Khail Street. Road users coming from Al Thumama and Old Airport have now direct access to Rawdat Al Khail Street without the need to use the old diversion," Al Ghanim said.

The three-level interchange is the first-of-its-kind in Qatar and contains two main bridges that connect Rawdat Al Khail Street and the Industrial Area Road in both directions.

Moreover, the interchange connects the E Ring Road with the southern part of Doha Expressway in one direction.

The project is 6.1 kilometers long and upon completion will be able to accommodate 20,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

Designed in a distinctive pentagonal shape, the interchange connects five main roads - E Ring Road, Doha Expressway, Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor, Industrial Area Road and Rawdat Alkhail Street.

The interchange will serve as a vital link in the area, which has many facilities including Al Thumama Stadium. It will feature three pedestrian bridges that provide easy access to the stadium.

The interchange also serves many important educational, health and commercial facilities. It will include a sophisticated intelligent transport system where surveillance cameras and a vehicle number monitor will be installed, as well as an emergency traffic system.

The Mesaimeer Interchange integrates with Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor through its connection to Al Wattiyyat Interchange, which is a strategic link between the southern part of Doha Expressway with Doha’s main highway.
