As the start of a new academic year draws nearer and in a bid to improve traffic to the venue of the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) yesterday opened the 1.5kilometer-long Umm Al Jamajim Street to traffic in Murraikh.

The new street will provide easy access to Khalifa International Stadium where the much-anticipated, major international event will take place from September 27 to October 6 this year.

The street will also improve connectivity to many schools and kindergartens in the area.

Ashghal's Highway Project Department manager engineer, Bader Darwish said, "The opening of Umm Al Jamajim Street will improve traffic movement for residents in Murraikh, Baaya, Luaib, and Muheirja and between Al Furousiya Street and Al Waab Street."

Darwish said, “Umm Al Jamajim Street will create better traffic connection for businesses and sports facilities including Aspire Zone."

The street, which had only one lane in each direction, has been developed into a two-lane road in each direction to accommodate about 8,000 vehicles per hour. According to Ashghal, this will reduce traffic time to more than 60 percent.

A median has been established to separate the two directions of traffic. This is in addition to the services roads set up on either side. Pedestrian and cycle paths are being finalized on both sides of the road.

Umm Al Jamajim Street is located in an area that comprises some key facilities such as Khalifa International Stadium, Aspire Zone, Villaggio Mall, Hyatt Plaza, and Equestrian Club in addition to several educational institutions.

The new road serves the areas of Baaya, Maherja, and Muraikh.

As part of the upgrading works, Al Baaya Street will remain closed for 45 days starting from today, August 8.

Ashghal has asked motorists to use Al Kharrara Street as an alternate route.
