Accomplished Qatari athlete Sheikha Asma Al Thani has now added another feather to her cap and this time she has now become the first-ever Arab mountaineer to scale Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-largest mountain. At 8,586 meters tall, the mountain is just one of the many summits she has already climbed and hopes to climb many more.

Qatar Olympic Committee announced the feat on their socials and lauded Sheikha Asma for this new achievement.

Sheikha Asma also shared the images and her feelings about having conquered this summit on her Instagram post. Describing Kanchenjunga, which lies between India and Nepal, she calls it ‘completely out of this world’ characterized by its deep crevasses, dramatic seracs, steep slopes, and rocky summit.

The athlete mentioned her initial hesitation of being unwell and wondering if she’d be able to make the climb. However, she persisted and attempted the climb. Her team passed Camp 2 to begin their summit push and then proceeded to pass Camp 3 and finally Camp 4 to reach the top of the summit in just under two days. Although the mountain is the third-largest in the world, Kanchenjunga is known for its extremely long summit push, which was challenging for the mountaineers.

Sheikha Asma said she was humbled to be the first Arab ever to summit this peak and hopes to climb many more. She further expressed her gratitude and respect for fellow team members who kept up each other’s strengths and were great companions to the top of the summit and back.

The acclaimed mountaineer has also been the first Qatari woman to climb Mountain Everest and the first woman from the Middle East to complete the Explorer’s Grand Slam. The Explorer’s Grand Slam involves climbing the seven summits and reaching the North Pole and the South Pole.
