Ace Qatari high jumper Mutaz Essa Barsham won the third Asian Games gold medal of his career at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium on Wednesday.

The reigning Olympic and three-time World high jump champion set a new Games record of 2.35M enroute to the title in China. South Korea’s Woo Sanghyeok (2.33) and Japan’s Shinno Tomohiro (2.29) finished in second and third places.

Qatar’s show jumping team — consisting of Faleh Alajami, Khalifa Al Thani, Rashid Al Marri and Bassem Mohammed — finished overall second behind Saudi Arabia (220.86sec) with a time of 229.96sec. The UAE finished third (226.84).

The three engaged in a three-way jump-off to determine the winners. While Saudi Arabia finished the jump-off in 111.83sec, Qatar did so in 117.84sec( four faults) and the UAE in 120.58sec (12 faults).

Qatar’s 4x400M relay team of Abderrahman Samba, Ashraf Osman, Ismail Abakar and Bassem Hemeida took silver with a season’s best time of 3mins 2.05sec. While India won gold (3:01.58), Sri Lanka finished third (3:02.55).

This took Qatar’s medal count at the Hangzhou Asian Games to 13, including four gold, six silver and three bronze.
