Trying to cut your grocery bill in Qatar? The smartest approach is not to pick one supermarket and assume it is always cheapest.
Prices move with promotions, brand, pack size, product origin and private-label options. In many cases, the exact same branded staple costs the same at different major supermarkets — while another item can be several riyals cheaper somewhere else that week.
For everyday shopping, large hypermarkets such as LuLu, Carrefour, Rawabi and Safari tend to compete strongly on staples and promotions. Monoprix, Spinneys and specialist supermarkets are more useful when you're looking for imported, premium or harder-to-find products.
Here's how to shop more strategically in Qatar in 2026.
Is there one cheapest supermarket in Qatar?
Not really.
Recent discussions among Qatar residents frequently recommend LuLu, Carrefour, Rawabi and other large hypermarkets for value, but shoppers also point out that different stores win on different products and promotions.
One recent Qatar community discussion summed it up well: there is no single Aldi-style chain that is automatically half the price of everywhere else. Prices need to be compared by product.
That means the better question is:
Which supermarket is cheapest for the things I actually buy?
LuLu Hypermarket
LuLu remains one of Qatar's strongest options for a large weekly shop, particularly if your basket includes:
- Rice and grains
- South Asian groceries
- Fresh produce
- Poultry
- Eggs
- Cooking ingredients
- Household products
- Bulk packs
Its own-brand range can also bring the unit price down.
Current examples include:
- LuLu private-label jasmine rice, 5kg — around QAR 24.50
- Ovalue white eggs, 30 — around QAR 14.75
- Al Waha medium eggs, 30 — around QAR 18
- Yara sunflower oil, 1.8L — around QAR 16.50
- Baladna fresh milk, 1L — QAR 8.
So LuLu can be very competitive — but it does not automatically beat every rival on every item.
Carrefour
Carrefour is particularly worth watching for:
- Weekly promotions
- Bulk deals
- Private-label products
- Household and cleaning products
- Dairy
- Imported groceries
Several standard local products currently cost exactly the same as at LuLu.
For example:
Baladna fresh milk 1L: QAR 8
Al Zain large white eggs, 30: QAR 22.75
Yara sunflower oil 1.8L: QAR 16.50.
This is why it is misleading to say one chain will “almost always” beat another.
Promotions and private label often matter more than the store name.
Al Meera
Al Meera is particularly useful because of its neighbourhood presence and wide coverage across residential areas.
It is a practical choice for:
- Local dairy
- Everyday essentials
- Top-up shopping
- Fresh produce
- Household basics
But I would not describe Al Meera as automatically one of Qatar's cheapest supermarkets.
Current community feedback is mixed: some shoppers rate it highly for loyalty rewards and convenience, while others find certain products pricier than LuLu, Carrefour or Rawabi.
What about subsidised goods?
This section needs an important distinction.
Qatar does operate a government Tamween supply-card programme for eligible households, offering subsidised goods such as rice, cooking oil, milk and sugar at fixed prices.
For example, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry currently lists:
- Basmati rice, 40kg — QAR 65
- Cooking oil, 12L — QAR 35
- White sugar, 25kg — QAR 25
However, these are government-subsidised supply-card goods for eligible beneficiaries, not ordinary supermarket prices available to every shopper.
So don't suggest that an expatriate can walk into Al Meera and automatically buy subsidised staples at Tamween prices.
Rawabi and Safari
Rawabi and Safari are useful value-shopping alternatives and often run aggressive promotions across:
- Rice
- Cooking oil
- Meat and poultry
- Cleaning products
- Personal care
- Snacks
- Household goods
Rawabi's current online catalogue, for example, lists basmati rice options ranging widely by brand, including Royal Taj 5kg around QAR 21 and India Gate Basmati Sella 5kg around QAR 36.50.
This illustrates an important point:
Brand choice can create a bigger price difference than supermarket choice.
MegaMart
I would move MegaMart out of the “budget supermarket” section.
It has long been associated with imported and Western grocery lines, and its current online store explicitly promotes premium and fresh produce.
That doesn't mean everything is expensive.
It means shoppers are more likely to choose MegaMart for:
- Imported products
- International brands
- Specialist ingredients
- Products that may be difficult to find elsewhere
rather than because it is consistently Qatar's lowest-price supermarket.
Monoprix and Spinneys
These make more sense in the premium/imported category.
They can be useful for:
- European products
- Organic ranges
- Imported cheeses
- Specialty ingredients
- Premium bakery and deli items
- International brands
If your grocery basket contains a large share of imported speciality products, your total can rise quickly.
But avoid saying the same basket is automatically twice as expensive. That would require a like-for-like price audit.
What about Géant?
I would not group Géant automatically with Monoprix and Spinneys.
It operates more like a mainstream hypermarket and carries a broad mix of household goods, groceries and imported products.
For editorial purposes, I would classify it as:
Mainstream / mid-range
rather than “premium.”
Current everyday grocery prices
Instead of publishing a broad range without saying where it came from, use live examples and make the brand, pack size and retailer clear.
Milk
Baladna fresh full-fat milk, 1L:
LuLu: QAR 8
Carrefour: QAR 8.
Baladna long-life milk, 1L:
Around QAR 7 at both major retailers.
Eggs
Prices vary heavily by brand and quantity.
Current examples include:
- Value white eggs, 30 — around QAR 14.50–14.75
- Qatari white eggs, 30 — around QAR 17.75–18
- Al Zain large white eggs, 30 — QAR 22.75.
So the original QAR 4.50–13.50 for six eggs is too broad to be a useful benchmark.
Sunflower oil
Current examples include:
- Zain sunflower oil, 1.5L — around QAR 10.75
- Yara sunflower oil, 1.8L — around QAR 16.50.
Rice
This is one category where brand matters enormously.
Current Carrefour examples for 5kg basmati range from roughly:
- QAR 25 for budget options
- QAR 32–40 for many mainstream brands
- QAR 55–85 for premium varieties.
Rawabi also shows 5kg basmati options from around QAR 21 upward.
So quoting simply “QAR 10.25–17.35 per kg” misses how much cheaper bulk packs can be.
Fresh produce: current examples
Produce prices change frequently with origin, season and promotion.
Current online listings show examples such as:
LuLu
- Potatoes — around QAR 3–3.50/kg
- Ecuador bananas — around QAR 4/kg
- Turkish tomatoes — around QAR 4.75/kg
- Farm cucumber — around QAR 6–7/kg
- Red apples — around QAR 7.50–8/kg, with other varieties higher.
Carrefour
- Potatoes — around QAR 3.50/kg
- Round tomatoes — around QAR 5/kg
- Cucumbers — around QAR 6.50/kg
- Bananas — around QAR 7.50/kg
- Royal Gala apples — around QAR 8.50/kg, with other varieties higher.
That means the original apple benchmark of QAR 4.50/kg is too low as a general 2026 planning figure.
How much should one person budget each month?
I would remove the claim that:
Budget supermarket = QAR 800–1,200
Mid-range = QAR 1,200–1,800
Premium = QAR 1,800–2,500
There is no reliable Qatar-wide study showing those spending bands by supermarket category.
Monthly grocery spending depends heavily on:
- How often you cook
- Meat and seafood consumption
- Imported vs local products
- Organic/specialty food
- Household cleaning products
- Delivery fees
- Promotions
- Whether toiletries are counted
- Food waste
- Household size
Two single people shopping at the same supermarket can therefore have completely different monthly bills.
A more useful Qatar Living approach would be to publish a fixed 15- or 20-item basket and compare that exact basket across stores on the same day.
The smartest way to save
Compare the same item, not just the same category
“Basmati rice” can mean a QAR 25 bag or an QAR 85 bag.
Compare the same brand, weight and variety.
Check promotions before leaving home
Major supermarkets regularly change their weekly deals.
A chain that is expensive for one product this week may be cheapest during the next promotion.
Use private label selectively
Private-label basics can save money on products such as:
- Rice
- Pasta
- Cleaning supplies
- Water
- Frozen products
- Household basics
But compare the unit price rather than assuming private label is automatically cheaper.
Buy larger packs only when the unit price is lower
A bigger bottle or bag is not automatically better value.
Compare:
QAR per kg / litre / piece
before choosing.
Split your shop
This remains the most realistic Qatar strategy.
For example:
- Staples and bulk goods at a large hypermarket
- Fresh produce wherever the quality and price are best that week
- Imported or specialty products from premium stores
- Promotion-only items from whichever chain is discounting them
FAQs
Which supermarket is cheapest in Qatar?
There is no single chain that is cheapest for every product.
Recent Qatar community discussions commonly identify LuLu, Carrefour and Rawabi as strong value options, but shoppers repeatedly note that prices vary item by item.
Is LuLu cheaper than Carrefour?
Sometimes, but not always.
Several exact products currently have identical prices at both chains — including Baladna 1L fresh milk and Al Zain large white eggs.
Is Al Meera cheap?
It can be competitive on selected products and promotions, but I would not describe it as universally cheaper than LuLu or Carrefour.
Its strongest advantage for many households is convenience and its large neighbourhood network.
Can expats buy subsidised groceries at Al Meera?
Do not confuse regular supermarket products with Qatar's Tamween programme.
Government-subsidised food items are supplied to eligible beneficiaries under the official supply-card system; they are not normal discounted products available to every supermarket customer.
Is MegaMart a budget supermarket?
I wouldn't classify it that way.
MegaMart carries a substantial imported and speciality range and currently markets its fresh produce as premium. It fits better as an imported/specialty supermarket.
Are Monoprix and Spinneys more expensive?
They generally occupy a more premium/import-focused position, particularly for imported and specialist ranges.
But to say exactly how much more expensive they are, you need a same-brand, same-size basket comparison.
Is private label always cheaper?
Often, but not automatically.
Check the unit price against branded alternatives and current promotions.
What is the best way to save on groceries in Qatar?
Compare weekly promotions, use private label where it makes sense, buy staples in cost-effective pack sizes and avoid relying on one supermarket for every category.
