Want a proper day out in Doha without draining your wallet? Winter is your window. From late October to April — with December, January and February generally offering the most comfortable weather — Qatar's cooler months are ideal for picnics, outdoor cafés and casual dining.
This guide rounds up the best budget-friendly outdoor dining options in Qatar, including free picnic spots, affordable food destinations, designated barbecue facilities and the costs worth planning for.
The cheapest option is often a supermarket picnic in a free public park. Pair that with an occasional casual meal in Souq Waqif or Katara, and you've got plenty of affordable weekend plans throughout the winter season.
Why winter is the best time for outdoor dining in Qatar
Qatar's cooler months are particularly well suited to outdoor dining. The season generally runs from late October through April, although temperatures can still be warm at either end of this period.
December to February usually brings the most comfortable conditions for afternoon picnics, waterfront cafés and outdoor food festivals.
While summer temperatures make outdoor meals less comfortable, winter gives residents more opportunities to enjoy parks, gardens and promenades without spending heavily on indoor entertainment.
Free and low-cost picnic parks
Some of Doha's best outdoor experiences cost little more than the food you bring along.
The parks below offer spacious green areas, scenic views and convenient locations for affordable picnics.
Aspire Park
Located in the heart of Aspire Zone, Aspire Park is one of Doha's best-known green spaces.
According to Visit Qatar, entry is free and the park is open 24 hours a day. Restaurants and restrooms generally operate from 8am to 10pm.
With expansive lawns, walking paths and a lake, Aspire Park is ideal for a relaxed afternoon picnic or an evening stroll.
Visitors can bring prepared food from home or pick up snacks and refreshments from nearby supermarkets and shopping centres, including Villaggio Mall.
Important: Pets are not permitted at Aspire Park.
Visitors should also follow the park's rules regarding cooking, waste disposal and permitted activities.
Al Bidda Park
Located near the Doha Corniche, Al Bidda Park is another excellent spot for a budget-friendly outdoor meal.
According to Visit Qatar, general admission is free. The park's official website lists opening hours from 4am to midnight daily, subject to changes during public holidays and special periods.
Al Bidda Park is divided into three connected areas: Arumailah, Al Bidda and Wadi Al Sail.
Visitors can enjoy landscaped gardens, walking and cycling tracks, playgrounds and wide green spaces suitable for picnics.
Unlike many other parks, Al Bidda also provides designated barbecue stations, although these must be booked in advance.
The fixed barbecue grills are available by reservation through the Al Bidda Park website or its mobile application.
Visitors are not permitted to use personal barbecue grills or light fires outside the approved facilities.
While general entry is free, parking, barbecue reservations and certain activities may involve additional charges.
MIA Park
MIA Park, located beside the Museum of Islamic Art on Doha's Corniche, offers some of the city's most recognisable waterfront views.
The park overlooks the West Bay skyline and is particularly popular for sunset walks, picnics and outdoor photography.
According to the Museum of Islamic Art's official website, MIA Park is open 24 hours a day, and general public access to the park is free.
Visitors can bring prepared food for a picnic or purchase refreshments from the park's café.
The park also features children's playgrounds, public artworks and other recreational activities.
However, barbecuing, open fires and pets are not permitted at MIA Park.
The park's free public access should also not be confused with admission to the Museum of Islamic Art itself, which has separate ticketing arrangements.
Know the park entry fees
Not every public park in Qatar operates under the same admission policy.
Under Ministerial Decision No. 48 of 2025, which amended the regulations governing public park service fees, specific entry charges apply to certain parks.
The published fees include:
- Al Khor Park — QAR 15 for general admission and QAR 10 for children under 10. Admission during events and festivals is listed at QAR 50 per person.
- Panda House — QAR 50 for general admission and QAR 25 for children under 14.
- Other parks designated by ministerial decision — QAR 10 for general admission, QAR 5 for children under 10 and QAR 30 during events and festivals.
- Persons with disabilities — Free admission under the applicable categories.
These charges do not automatically apply to every public park in Qatar.
The QAR 10 category applies to other parks specifically designated by ministerial decision, rather than all unfenced public parks.
Aspire Park, Al Bidda Park and MIA Park currently advertise free general public access through their respective official sources.
Some parks also charge separately for parking, barbecue stations, sporting facilities or other activities.
If you're planning a budget outing, check the specific park's official admission and activity fees rather than assuming every public park charges the same amount.
Grill your own feast: outdoor barbecue facilities
For residents who prefer a barbecue over a cold picnic, Al Bidda Park is one of the confirmed options in Doha.
The park has purpose-built barbecue stations in designated areas, with booking required before use.
According to the Al Bidda Park visitor guidelines:
- Barbecue stations must be reserved in advance through the park's website or mobile app.
- Visitors must use only the fixed grill assigned to their booking.
- Personal grills and open fires are not permitted elsewhere in the park.
- Children and pets must be kept away from cooking areas.
- Visitors must clean the barbecue station and dispose of extinguished charcoal responsibly.
Reservation availability and any applicable charges should be checked during booking.
Another outdoor barbecue option has previously been offered at Al Bayt Stadium Park in Al Khor, where a barbecue kiosk was introduced with grilled dishes, marinated meat and outdoor cooking stations.
The kiosk's original published operating hours were Tuesday to Saturday, 12:30pm to 10pm, but those timings date back to its 2020 opening announcement and have not been independently reconfirmed for the 2026–2027 winter season.
Visitors should therefore confirm whether the service is currently operating before making a special trip.
For a budget-friendly barbecue, sharing the costs of meat, sides and any grill reservation among friends or family can help keep the per-person expense manageable.
Affordable outdoor dining venues
If you'd rather skip the preparation and let someone else do the cooking, Doha has plenty of casual dining destinations where you can enjoy the winter
