Carnegie Mellon Qatar Launches Accelerator Research Grants Programme

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, a Qatar Foundation partner university, has launched the Accelerator Research Grants Programme to support competitive, high-impact academic research and strengthen the university’s research environment.

The programme will provide long-term support for faculty members to expand their research and increase scholarly output through annual competitive funding cycles. Its inaugural cycle includes seven grants covering fields such as the humanities, physics, software systems and cancer research.

The initiative also introduces the Distinguished Undergraduate Researcher Award for students who demonstrate exceptional commitment to research, intellectual curiosity and active participation in the university’s summer research programmes.

Students are nominated for the award by their research supervisors. Selected students can continue their research for up to 10 hours a week throughout a full academic year, allowing them to complete or expand projects begun during the summer.

CMU-Q said the grants are intended to encourage interdisciplinary research and partnerships within Education City, while supporting projects that address real-world challenges and produce scientific and social value.

The university is also preparing to launch the Incubator Grants Programme, which will provide smaller awards for early-stage research ideas and concepts, alongside seed funding packages for new faculty members.

CMU-Q Dean Michael Trick said expanding research support would create a sustainable impact in Qatar and strengthen the country’s growing research community. Associate Dean for Research Jennifer Bruder said the new programme would give faculty members the resources needed to deepen their work and explore research questions more comprehensively.
