Qatar’s Ministry of Interior (MoI) has initiated a new awareness campaign called ‘Accident-Free Summer,’ by which it is also clamping down on unruly drivers on the road.

The MoI booked 143 drivers in the first six months of 2018 for driving without their license on them, said Captain Khalid Mubarak Al Khulaifi, head of Traffic at Dukhan, according to the Gulf Times.

The campaign, now in its fourth week, had earlier highlighted the issues of stopping in the yellow box, using mobile phones while driving and not wearing seatbelts.

Motorists who already have a driving licence, but don’t carry it along with them while driving will be slammed with a fine of QR300, reported Qatar Tribune.

“Motorists must always carry their driving licence on them and should only be driving the vehicles they’re permitted to drive. So, a license to drive automatic transmission vehicles doesn't enable a motorist to drive a manual transmission vehicle,” Al Hajri said.

Motorists should always carry their original valid licence and a photocopy or a soft copy of the same will not be accepted during traffic checks. A person having license for light, heavy or equipment vehicles are not permitted to drive other vehicles.

Captain Al Khulaifi said that it was a criminal offence to let a person without a driving licence to drive a car. He warned that juveniles who were caught driginfg without a license would be sent to the Juvenile Police Department for further actions against them.

Visitors/tourists can apply for temporary driving license within 15 days of entry

Qatar has been promoting tourism and encouraging visitors to come into the country. In order to make them feel more at home and give them the freedom of movement, rules have been softened to allow them to apply for temporary driving licenses.

Now, visitors and tourists holding a valid non-Qatari driving licence can apply for temporary Qatari driving permit within 15 days of entering Qatar, reported The Peninsula.

This license can be held only for the period of their stay in the country or as specified by Qatar’s Licensing Authority.

Visitors can also obtain a temporary driving licence valid for three months, provided they undergo a driving test held by the Traffic Department.
