The Ehteraz app has been updated with a new field showing the ‘third dose’ of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) yesterday announced that it will begin administering the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccines Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna from September 15.

The first few months of the booster program will prioritize high-risk individuals including those over 65 years of age and those with chronic conditions that increase the risk of severe COVID-19, in addition to frontline healthcare workers and other sectors.

Initially, the booster shot will be given to high-risk individuals who took their second shot of the vaccine more than eight months ago. At present, booster shots of Pfizer and Moderna are being provided.

The Ministry earlier highlighted that booster doses are safe and are not associated with any significant side effects.

In August, the Ministry began administering a third dose of these vaccines to people with specific immunodeficiency diseases.

People under this categorization are at a higher risk of developing serious, prolonged illness if they contract COVID-19 as they may not get the same level of immunity after receiving two doses of the vaccine, in comparison to people who do not suffer from immunodeficiency, the Ministry had explained.
