Roads around schools in the country tend to get busy in the mornings and evenings as thousands of parents descend on the area to drop off and pick up their children.
Due to the congestion, tempers could run high, making the place an accident prone and unsafe area for people.
Qatar’s Public Works Authority Ashghal has been working hard to change the scenario by carrying out a comprehensive plan to improve road safety features around Qatar’s 475 different schools, reported Qatar Tribune.
The move is aimed at ensuring the safety of students, parents and educational staff during and after school entry.
So far, safety road safety works have been completed around 284 schools, of which 176 were done this year alone. Forty-two surrounding areas are being finalised, and roadworks are being planned for 149 schools.
Schools were identified in coordination with the Ministry of Interior and the National Committee for Road Safety based on a study conducted by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.
The safety work includes building safe roads around schools, providing parking spaces for vehicles, building small roundabouts that will regulate traffic in these areas, installation of road signs near schools, setting 30 kmph as the maximum speed limit in the surrounding areas and set up speed breakers.
While a secure corridor has been created to ensure the safety of pedestrians and those with special needs, a bright, non-smooth asphalt strip has also been installed to alert drivers when entering or leaving the school area, according to another report in Qatar Tribune.
Clear warning signs have also been installed at the entrances and exits of the roads leading to schools.
