If you have travelled through Al Wakra street at least once, you should have seen the famous shell sculpture standing proudly in the middle of a roundabout.

The sculpture, one of the most recognisable landmarks in the area, stood the test of time. However now, its days in the current location is numbered.

The shell sculpture at the Shell Roundabout will soon have a new home as the roundabout is expected to be converted into a traffic intersection by 2019, reported The Peninsula.

The relocation will be made as part of the upgrade of the Al Wakra Main Road, being done by Public Works Authority Ashghal

The institution tweeted out that ‘the Pearl roundabout on Al Wakra road will be moved to a convenient location to convert the roundabout into an intersection in 2019 in coordination with the Special Engineering Office.’

Many famous roundabouts in the country — Sports roundabout, parachute roundabout and TV roundabout to name just three — had been changed to signalled intersections to manage traffic in the area better and reduce congestion.

While many people reacted to the movement of the sculpture with nostalgia, most agreed that it was necessary to develop the road further.

While the final resting place of the sculpture has not been officially declared, Al Watan newspaper reported that it would be set up at the Al Wakra souq. But there is no official confirmation for the same.

The third stage of the Al Wakra Main Road upgrade project starts about a kilometre before the Pearl Roundabout and extends up to Woqod Petrol Station located towards the city of Mesaieed.

Three main roundabouts — Pearl Roundabout, Ooredoo Roundabout and Wadi Afja Roundabout in Al Jabal area — will be changed to signalled intersections.
