There has been a lot of chatter going around the Internet saying the current Gulf crisis could have an adverse impact on Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
However, FIFA boss Gianni Infantino has categorically ruled out any changes and said the World Cup in Qatar will go on, according to Gulf Times.
In an interview published in Swiss newspapers Le Matin Dimanche and Sonntagszeitung, the head of the global football body said he expected the diplomatic situation to be back to normal by the time the tournament is played in five-and-a-half years’ time.
“We’re facing a diplomatic crisis. I’m confident the region will return to a normal situation by 2022,” he said.
“Obviously, if football can offer a small contribution to improve the situation, I won't hesitate to offer my help,” The Peninsula quoted him as saying.
He added that FIFA was “closely watching the evolving situation and we’re in regular contact with the highest authorities in Qatar.”
Asked if he believed that Qatar's hosting was in danger, Infantino replied: “No. In any case, I’m not in the habit of speculating and I’m not going to this time either. The essential role of FIFA, as I understand it, is to deal with football and not to interfere in geopolitics,” Qatar Tribune reported him as saying.
“But on the other hand, I’m confident the region will return to a normalised situation. The World Cup is in 2022, in five years,” he added.
