Upon the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, a plane carrying 60 tonnes of relief aid for flood-affected people arrived in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum yesterday. 

The plane belongs to the Amiri Airforce of the Ministry of Defence.

The aid comes under an emergency grant allocated by the Qatar Fund for Development worth $5million.

A search and rescue team of Lekhwiya has also been dispatched to assist in relief operations that aim to alleviate the suffering of thousands of families in the flood-stricken areas.  

The Standing Committee for Rescue and Relief Works and Humanitarian Aids for Afflicted Areas in Brotherly and Friendly Countries headed by Lekhwiya was responsible for preparing the relief materials and coordinating with the concerned authorities to deliver them to the affected areas.

Ambassador of Qatar to Sudan His Excellency Abdulrahman bin Ali Al Kubaisi said this assistance is a sincere expression of Qatar’s leadership, government and people to extend support to brotherly Sudan due to the floods and rains that have hit the country recently.

The ambassador said Qatar's aid includes food items as well as support for the health and environmental sanitation sectors.

The second plane carrying relief materials will arrive in Khartoum on Tuesday, September 3. 

He said Qatar is keen to respond promptly to urgent humanitarian needs all over the world based on its vital role in this regard.

Qatar Charity and Qatar Red Crescent Society have earlier sent relief convoys to several affected areas in Sudan in cooperation and coordination with the competent Sudanese authorities, he added.

In this regard, Dr Al Siddiq Tawer, a member of the Sovereignty Council in Sudan, praised Qatar's support for the flood-hit Sudanese people.

In his remarks to Sudan Radio, Dr Tawer hailed Qatar's immediate support, providing humanitarian and relief assistance to the affected people.

“The immediate assistance is not alien to the brothers. They have been with the Sudanese people at all the turning points,” he said.
