Fans of local dates in Qatar can rejoice as the Fresh Local Dates Festival returns with its sixth edition next week.

To be held at Souq Waqif, the mega event will feature an array of varieties of dates from more than 80 farms in the country.

The festival complements the Ministry of Municipality and Environment's (MME) continuous efforts to support and encourage all national products, including dates, under an ambition to achieve food security in the country. It also aims to encourage the conservation and care of palm trees.

Head of The Department of Agricultural Guidance and Services, Department of Agricultural Affairs, MME, Ahmed A Yafei told The Peninsula, “This edition will be distinguished and will witness a large production, considering there was no event last year in Souq Waqif.”

Regarding the prices, the MME official said they would be acceptable and suitable for all visitors.

Timings of this edition of the Local Dates Festival will be from 4 pm to 10 pm, keeping in view the summer weather.

The Organizing Committee has established certain requirements for dates on sale at the festival. These include: the dates should be in the ripening stage and free from odor. They must also have a natural taste and smell.

Some of the finest local dates such as Al Khalas, Al Shichi, Al Khanizi, Barhi, Iraqi, Silji, Sufri, Nabt Saif, Al Sawafi, and Khurdi will be available for purchase at the festival.

Last year MME held the festival jointly with Al Meera Consumer Goods Company at Al Meera’s Hayat Plaza branch.
