Gulf Cup 27: Qatar Face Yemen on Sunday Seeking to Secure Semi-Final Place

Qatar's national football team will seek to strengthen its prospects of qualifying for the semi-finals of the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup, currently being held in the Saudi city of Jeddah, when it faces Yemen on Sunday at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in the second round of Group B.

Qatar began its campaign with a 2-0 victory over Bahrain in the opening round, earning three points and moving level at the top of the group with the United Arab Emirates, which defeated Yemen 4-0 in its first match. Bahrain and Yemen remain without points.

A victory over Yemen will be enough for Qatar to secure qualification for the semi-finals if the UAE defeats Bahrain in the group's other match, which will be played on the same day at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium. Under that scenario, the two winning teams would officially qualify, leaving their final-round meeting to decide only the group leadership, while Bahrain and Yemen would officially exit the tournament.

Qatar delivered a strong performance in its opening match against defending champion Bahrain and succeeded in overcoming a determined opponent 2-0 despite the challenges it faced.

Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui handled the details of the match effectively, finding solutions after the team missed opportunities during the first half. Boualem Khoukhi opened the scoring early in the second half before the coach successfully managed the numerical disadvantage that followed Ahmed Fathi's dismissal in the 70th minute. Qatar adopted a secure defensive approach and relied on counter-attacks, which contributed to a second goal in the closing moments through a penalty won and successfully converted by captain Hassan Al Haydos, who had entered as a substitute.

Lopetegui praised his players after the opening match, saying they had dealt well with the details of the encounter and demonstrated a strong desire to win at the start of their tournament campaign. Qatar is seeking to progress towards its objective of winning the title after a 12-year absence from the Gulf podium, with its most recent championship secured in Saudi Arabia in 2014.

The coach stressed the need to put the opening match behind them and focus on the second encounter so the players can regain their physical readiness amid the short turnaround, high temperatures and humidity. He expressed confidence in the ability of every player in the squad to continue delivering the expected level, secure a second consecutive victory and strengthen Qatar's qualification prospects.

Lopetegui concluded by stressing that the task against Yemen would not be easy, with the opposing team seeking to preserve its remaining competitive hopes. He noted that Gulf Cup competitions have a distinctive character that leaves them open to every possibility and called on his players to demonstrate the highest levels of concentration.

Yemen, meanwhile, will seek to produce a different performance from its opening appearance and preserve its hopes of competing for one of the two qualification places. Its task is difficult following the 4-0 defeat by the UAE, making a positive result essential to avoid a second loss that would eliminate it from the tournament.

In the group's other match, the UAE will face Bahrain on Sunday at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium in an encounter considered decisive for the Bahraini team.

Following its emphatic 4-0 opening-round victory over Yemen, the UAE will seek a second consecutive win to raise its total to six points. That tally would be sufficient to secure official qualification if Qatar defeats Yemen in the same round.

The UAE demonstrated considerable readiness in every respect, not only to qualify for the semi-finals but also to compete for the title, with several of its experienced players producing impressive performances.

Bahrain, for its part, must win and compensate for its opening defeat against Qatar to revive its hopes of reaching the semi-finals. A draw would keep its chances alive but make its task in the final round more complicated, while defeat would confirm its elimination from the tournament.
