HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who was on a two-day working visit to Austria, met Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and held talks with him at the Hofburg presidential palace yesterday.

They discussed aspects of enhancing cooperation in various fields, especially in politics, economy, investment, health and education, reported Qatar Tribune.

They discussed the latest regional and international developments, especially the situation in Palestine, in addition to the ongoing Gulf crisis.

Later, HH The Amir held a meeting with Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.

The leaders witnessed the signing of two memorandums of understanding (MoU) at the Chancellery in Vienna, according to Gulf Times.

The first MoU to be signed was on economic, trade and technical co-operation between Qatar's Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Austrian Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs.

The pact aims to promote economic relations, improve the level of trade exchange between the two countries, encourage the establishment of exhibitions and events and exempt customs duties on some imports and exports.

The second MoU, signed between Qatar's National Tourism Council and the Austrian Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism, aims to develop and promote co-operation between both countries in this field.

Bilateral relations between Qatar and Austria, including the economic and trade ties, are expected to deepen and strengthen in the coming years.

The two-way trade exchange between the two countries reached over QR786m in 2018, said Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim Al Thani, Chairman of Qatar Chamber, according to The Peninsula.

Addressing the Qatari-Austrian Business Forum, Sheikh Khalifa underscored the depth of relations between both countries in all fields, especially in economic and trading aspects.

He noted that relations between the two countries strengthened considerably after the inauguration of the Austrian Embassy in Doha in 2011.

Currently, five Austrian companies are operating in Qatar with 100% capital. Meanwhile, 42 Qatari-Austrian companies are working in various sectors including IT, advertising, contracting and tourism.
