HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani congratulated Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for winning a historic extension of his term in office on Sunday.

In a tweet, Sheikh Tamim congratulated Erdogan on his win, wishing him success in his new term to achieve the aspirations of the Turkish people in progress and prosperity. He also wished for strong relations between the two countries to further develop in the future.

Erdogan and his opponent Kemal Kilicdaroglu had to appear in a run-off election after each candidate failed to secure more than 50% votes required for an outright win in the first round on May 14.

In Sunday’s run-off election, Erdogan received 52.14% of votes to Kilicdaroglu’s 47.86%, said Turkey’s Supreme Election Council.

The win sealed Erdogan’s place in history as he will extend his 20-year rule for another five years. He thus broke the 15-year presidentship record held by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey.

“We’ve completed the second round of the presidential elections with the favour of our people. God willing, we’ll be worthy of your trust as we’ve been for the last 21 years,” Erdogan said while appearing briefly outside his house.

Turkish nationals in Qatar took to the streets to celebrate the leader’s win. Hundreds joined in on the celebrations in a spontaneous celebration at the Katara Cultural Village.

The Al Jaber twin towers in Doha had lit up with images of the Turkish flag and president Erdogan, who had been leading the runoff elections.
