HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who is in Paris at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, attended the opening of the Paris Peace Forum yesterday.

The session, which was held at the prestigious Grand Halle de la Villette cultural centre, was attended by a number of heads of state and governments, reported Gulf Times.

The Paris Peace Forum, conceived by Macron, is intended to highlight the importance of international institutions in helping resolve conflicts, avert wars and spread prosperity.

At the ceremony, the leaders of France and Germany called for a unified approach to fostering world peace.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel opened the Paris Peace Forum and it was followed by a ceremony to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I. The event ended with a warning that ‘blinkered’ nationalism was gaining ground in Europe and beyond.

“Most of the challenges today cannot be solved by one nation alone, but together. That’s why we need a common approach,” Merkel was quoted as saying by Qatar Tribune.

The Paris Peace Forum seeks to promote a multilateral approach to security and governance and ultimately avoid the errors that led to the outbreak of World War One.

The aim of the forum, organised to coincide with the global commemorations marking 100 years since the end of World War I, is to show that there are lots of forces in the international system — states, NGOs, foundations, intellectuals, companies — who believe we need a world of rules, an open world and a multilateral world, chief organiser Justin Vaisse said.

Around 70 leaders including US and Russian Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin marked the centenary of the 1918 Armistice in the French capital at 11am local time.

HH The Amir, who was accompanied by a large official delegation, left the French capital yesterday evening.
