HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani presided over the opening ceremony of Expo 2023 Doha at the Al Bidda Park on Monday evening.

Sheikh Tamim, who said the country gave special priority in combating climate change and desertification, pointed out that environmental development was one of four pillars on which Qatar National Vision 2030 was based.

“Environmental development is one of the four pillars on which Qatar National Vision 2030 has been based since 2008. The State of Qatar gives special priority to combating climate change and desertification and today, the inauguration of the 2023 Doha Horticulture Expo comes within the framework of that priority. It’s the first global expo of its kind and class in Qatar and the region,” wrote Sheikh Tamim on his official X account.

HH the Amir also welcomed guests from all around the world to Qatar to be a part of the Expo.

Meanwhile, Bureau International des Expositions’s (BIE) Secretary-General Dimitri Kerkentzes said Qatar’s hosting of the mega event reflected the country’s commitment to mitigate the effects of climate change, direct the world’s attention on the urgent crises that the earth is facing and protect nature for future generations.

“The exhibition’s theme — Green Desert, Better Environment — represents a call to fight desertification and stop the land’s degradation, as well as a reminder that nature’s strength and resilience can happen even in the most difficult circumstances,” he said during his opening speech at Expo 2023 Doha’s opening ceremony.

“Expo 2023 Doha is an invitation to the world to do their duty for the optimal investment of resources and exploitation of the land, as well as a call to take a path towards world prosperity.

“The participation of dozens of organizations and countries, as well as millions of visitors, will help shed light on the topic of nature and the impact of humans on it in order to provide a better sustainable future for all,” he added.

He stated that Expo 2023 Doha, which will be held in the heart of Doha, is an open invitation to everyone to benefit from horticultural innovations from all over the world, as well as showcase the creativity, ingenuity and care of all countries, organizations and individuals in the event.
