His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani yesterday condoled with the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the victims of a powerful earthquake that struck the Izmir province of Turkey.

The 6.6-magnitude earthquake jolted Izmir on the Turkish Agean, injuring 800 people and killing at least 26 in the province, Al Jazeera reported. 

The Mayor of Izmir Tunc Soyer told CNN that at least 20 buildings in Izmir were destroyed as the earthquake hit the city of Izmir.

Search and rescue operations have been ongoing as it wasn't clear how many people may be stuck under the debris.

Following the unfortunate calamity, HH the Amir expressed Qatar's solidarity with Turkey stating that Qatar is ready to help alleviate the impact of the disaster. 

In a call with the Turkish President, HH the Amir also wished a speedy recovery for all those injured in the catastrophe.

His Excellency Qatar's Prime Minister and Minister of Interior also held a telephonic conversation with HE Minister of Interior of the Republic of Turkey. HE the PM expressed his sincere condolences on the victims of the earthquake.
