HH The Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani officially inaugurated the Laffan Refinery 2, which is touted as the largest condensate refinery anywhere in the world.

The facility, which is majority owned by Qatar Petroleum, has a total processing capacity of 146,000 barrels of condensate per day from the North Field, reported Gulf Times.

HH the Emir inaugurated the facility during a special ceremony held at the Qatar National Convention Centre, attended by senior ministers and other top officials.

With the opening of the new facility, the Laffan Refinery Complex will almost double their production levels to around 292,000 barrels per day. It means Qatar will now become the world’s largest condensate producer, with the largest condensate refining capacity on the globe.

The LR2 is an important milestone in the development of the oil and gas sector in Qatar due to its role in diversifying Qatar’s energy mix, reported Qatar Tribune.

The LR 2 produces low sulfur euro-V specification products like naphtha, Jet-A1, ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD), propane and butane for local and international markets.

The refinery has a daily production capacity of 60,000 barrels of naphtha, 53,000 barrels of jet fuel, 24,000 barrels of gasoil and 9,000 barrels of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Qatargas will be in charge of operating the refinery on behalf of its shareholders — Qatar Petroleum (84%), Total (10%), Cosmo (2%), Idemitsu (2%), Mitsui (1%) and Marubeni (1%).

Meanwhile, the Qatar News Agency has put the total value of the Laffan Refinery 2 facility at QR3bn.
