HH The Amir receives Foreign Policy Association Medal for diplomacy and mediation

The Foreign Policy Association honored His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani in recognition of his pioneering role in international mediation and diplomacy.

At an event organized especially for the occasion in New York, HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani received the medal on behalf of HH The Amir, in the presence of Mr. Noel Latif, President and Executive Director of the Foreign Policy Association, Ms. Sanaa Sabbagh, Deputy Director of the Society, members of its Board of Directors, and a number of high-level dignitaries.

In a welcome speech, the President and Executive Director of the Foreign Policy Association expressed his deep appreciation to HH The Amir for accepting the medal, adding that the honor embodies the pioneering role and significant contributions of His Highness in promoting efforts to maintain international peace and security, adhering to the principle of mediation, dialogue and diplomatic endeavours in the State of Qatar's foreign policy, and enhancing multilateral cooperation at the regional and international levels.

For her part, Mrs. Sanaa Sabbagh, in a speech on behalf of the President and members of the Society's Board of Directors, expressed the Society's pride in awarding the medal to His Highness the Amir, expressing her thanks to the State of Qatar for its important role in promoting peace. She also praised His Highness's leadership and support for dialogue and the preservation of prospects for peaceful cooperation, in light of the deep uncertainty that the world is witnessing as a result of many political developments.

She said that this occasion confirms the Association's conviction that diplomacy requires patience, perseverance and readiness to communicate and exchange views despite differences, which are essential elements for the promotion of peace and the strengthening of ties between peace-loving countries.

In her acceptance speech, the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations expressed the appreciation of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to the Foreign Policy Assembly for this honor, noting that for more than a century, the Society has been consolidating the conviction that the presence of an informed public constitutes the basis of international responsibility.

Under His Highness's leadership, the State of Qatar has maintained a pivotal role in the international arena and established its position as an internationally recognized mediator and a steadfast supporter of efforts to spare countries from the cycle of war and violence, through the development of human capital through education, an approach that His Highness has adopted since he assumed the reins of power in June 2013.

Her Excellency explained that Qatar's foreign policy, under the leadership of His Highness the Amir, is based on the peaceful settlement of disputes, respect for international law, the protection of civilians, and the belief that no conflict cannot be resolved through dialogue. She also pointed out that the State of Qatar continues to consolidate its position as a global hub for investment, technology, energy, education and sports, reflecting its openness to the world and its keenness to partner with it.

In this context, Her Excellency pointed out that the State of Qatar's approach in this regard is based on two main factors: the first is that mediation should be based on a clear goal of achieving and building sustainable peace, which has made the State of Qatar known as an honest and reliable mediator who enjoys the trust of the parties to conflicts, including those who do not trust any other party, while the second factor is that peace without reconstruction is neither a temporary truce nor a real peace.

In this regard, Her Excellency explained that the State of Qatar, through its participation in development and humanitarian efforts, contributes to helping countries overcome conflicts, build sustainable peace, and prevent a return to war, adding that investing in people, especially the youth, through education and providing opportunities, is the core of His Highness' vision, as ensuring that an entire generation has access to future opportunities is the closest guarantee to prevent the recurrence of conflicts, reviewing in this context a number of examples The State of Qatar's efforts in the field of mediation and the promotion of peace, including Afghanistan, Gaza, Darfur, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and other regions.

Regarding the current developments in the region, she pointed out that the State of Qatar and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries have faced difficult circumstances as a result of Iran's illegal and illegal attacks and Iran's obstruction of the right to freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, in clear violation of international law to facilitate dialogue between the United States of America and Iran, adding that these efforts are still ongoing, and that their goal is clear, which is to de-escalate and promote peace, while stressing the position of the State of Qatar on the need to guarantee the right to freedom of navigation through the Straits of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb.

In this context, Her Excellency stated that the State of Qatar does not consider mediation as a manifestation of weakness, but rather as the most difficult form of power, as it requires the ability to absorb criticism from all parties, to continue dialogue when others withdraw, and to adhere to confidence in the possibility of achieving peace.

She took the opportunity to emphasize the long-standing partnership between the State of Qatar and the United States, which spans multiple fields, from security and energy to education, investment and culture, noting that this partnership continues to develop and deepen.

Her Excellency concluded her speech by noting that the State of Qatar views this medal as a sincere tribute to the contributions of His Highness the Amir in supporting the process of peace, diplomacy and dialogue.

It is worth mentioning that the Board of Directors of the Foreign Policy Association unanimously approved the award of the medal this year to His Highness the Amir, in recognition of His Highness's contributions in the field of foreign policy and the promotion of understanding and cooperation between countries.
