Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC)’s Qatar Blood Services will be launching three new mobile blood donation units soon to increase blood availability in the country.

These units will be launched as part of preparations for international events including the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Seddiqa Al Mahmood, HMC’s Blood Donor Center Medical Manager said, “The new mobile blood donation units will be well-equipped and have more capacity to collect and store blood.

HMC Blood Donor Centre has achieved many laurels in its pursuit of excellence and is working hard for the future.

Providing blood and blood products in Qatar remains a strategic option, adding that they would continue to increase their innovative and renewable awareness programmes in the community to attract donors.

The innovative blood donation awareness programmes we have initiated at HMC, are keeping us on top of voluntary blood donation.

We will continue to play a vital role in nurturing the culture of blood donation in the community to keep enriching our strategic stock in the Blood Donor Centre and to continue meeting the needs for blood and blood products by all the hospitals and medical facilities in Qatar.”

To donate blood, a person must be a healthy adult who is at least 17 years old, has no serious chronic sickness or past infections, has a bodyweight of at least 50 kilograms, and has a hemoglobin level of at least 13 grams for males and 12.5 grams for females.

The donor must be free of fever, cough, or any other infection on the day of the donation and must have gotten enough sleep.

Siddiqa Al Mahmoudi, Medical Director of the Blood Donor Centre at HMC said, “it is true that Qatar is 100 percent self-sufficient in the sense that the country does not import any blood units from outside the country and rely entirely on local volunteer donors.

However, due to the ever expansion of health care facilities, there is an exponential increase of demands for blood supplies.“
