Interviews can be tricky, especially if they’re for your dream job or promotions. Getting back into the job market during COVID-19 times itself has been a difficult task and you add one on one interviews to this? We get it, it's stressful.
We’ve already guided you on how to bounce back into the job market so it was only natural for QL to help you tackle some difficult questions! During the interview, along with a long list of things you need to be prepared for, we help you tackle the most difficult question: What is your greatest weakness? QL breaks it down for you!
Fact are always appreciated
Let us be real: anyone who is interviewing you is going to be able to see right through this one. So, it's always best to state facts and be clear about what you generally believe is your weak point. We wouldn’t recommend giving a list but keeping it limited to 1-2 factors.
Conquer your weakness
We say it and we need you to believe it. Conquer that weakness and show your interviewers how you overcame your weakness, learned from it, and made it one of your strongest points. When you’re telling them about your weakness, make sure it isn’t an issue that could be seen as a big problem in succeeding in your role. You wouldn’t want to say you find it hard to work with certain personalities while applying for a team manager position.
Give examples
While you’re speaking about your weakness, always have a counterargument on how you either have already found a way around it or plan to take a new route to break the habit. One thing that we’ve seen people struggle with would be managing deadlines. Perhaps you could start with how you have given yourself personal targets and deadlines to keep your anxiety and time management in control.
Take this as an opportunity
This question, however nervous it makes you, should be taken as an opportunity to highlight your strengths. Frame your answer positively and how you met your challenge or intend to meet your challenge this way. Combine different activities of self-awareness and problem solving, making sure you stand out from other job applicants.
QL tips:
Making sure we take you all the way, here are a few things you should not say:
Achieving perfection
The biggest red flag would be saying you don’t have any weaknesses and coming across as an arrogant or dishonest individual. It’s always best to be clear about these things if you’re planning on working in an organization.
Don’t exaggerate
Don’t go overboard with your weakness at thing point. You don’t want to come across as an anxious person who is not confident about their work. We’d give this answer a minute or two and proceed to the next one!
