The emergence of a pandemic that has lasted for over two years has globally triggered multiple mental health struggles. Covid-19 has taken an emotional toll on many people and the many concerns include post-pandemic stress disorder, grief, and pandemic news-related psychological stress.

The uncertain changes in travel and public restrictions, possible lockdowns, decreased social contact, isolation, and grief are all contributing factors to negative mental health. These are valid feelings to experience but it can definitely affect your emotional health in the long run. It is okay to feel hopeless and powerless sometimes, and you must know that there is always a way to seek help and overcome these emotions.

Chereen Shurafa, a mental health counselor, advice columnist, and published author explains how simple tips go a long way in alleviating mention health. She shares her tips on how to feel better and overcome negative mental health struggles:

Make a daily commitment to contact at least one person to maintain a social connection. It could be via phone, text, or even in person. Talking and listening to one another is a great way to gain quick encouragement and validate your own feelings.

  1. Create and follow a realistic routine for you to follow, that is achievable and not difficult for you. Write down a simple schedule and also incorporate your dull, mundane tasks with few stress-free activities to relieve stress and anxiety. This makes you more aware of your day’s activities and when it is simpler to achieve, it gives you a sense of accomplishment.
  2. Mothers can find it difficult to stick to a specific daily schedule. So, it is better if mothers can prioritize a few important tasks on a weekly basis. Take a moment to relax and re-energize yourself.
  3. Be kind to yourself. Remind yourself that this is an uncertain time and you are doing your best to get through it.
  4. Prioritize your daily goals in a way that you do not get overwhelmed. Allow yourself some grace time on days when you are having a difficult day or really need to slow down. Everything can be done the next day.
  5. Seek help when you feel that nothing is helping your feelings and it is becoming unbearable. It is important to speak to a professional mental health expert like a therapist, counsellor, psychiatrist, or psychologist. HMC’s Mental Health Helpline offers free resources for you to seek help in a safe space, anonymously.

Remember, anyone can have mental health struggles and you are never alone in this. Following small steps to overcome your struggles is also an achievement in itself. Every step counts. Your mental health will always be valuable and you can always find help if you need it.
