India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is set to undertake an official visit to Qatar as part of a tour of the region which includes Kuwait.

The Minister, who will remain in Qatar from Sunday to Tuesday, will be accompanied by a high-level delegation from the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi, reported Gulf Times.

During her visit, Swaraj is set to hold meetings with Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.

Qatar and Kuwait are two of India’s key energy security partners in West Asia. India’s External Affairs Ministry said she will, in addition to Qatari leaders, also meet leading members of the Indian community, according to The Peninsula.

“Qatar hosts about seven lakh Indians. It is a reliable energy partner, supplying more than 50% of India’s natural gas imports,” said a statement by India’s External Affairs Ministry.

Bilateral trade between India and Qatar stood at $9.9bn in 2017-18.

Qatar and India are also expected to sign important agreements during the visit, which will provide an opportunity for both countries to hold an in-depth discussion on various global, regional and bilateral issues, according to Qatar Tribune.

This is Sushma Swaraj’s first visit to Qatar as India’s external affairs minister. In August, HE Sheikh Mohammed had visited New Delhi.

The bilateral visits to India of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in March 2015, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani in December 2016 and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Qatar in June 2016 have all further boosted the cordial relationships between the two countries.
