Each year on September 21, the world comes together to mark the International Day of Peace, a UN initiative dedicated to strengthening ideals of harmony and dialogue across nations. This day serves as a reminder that peace is not only a global aspiration but a shared responsibility. The 2025 Theme is to Act Now for a Peaceful World and in this time of turbulence, tumult and uncertainty, it is critical for everyone to take concrete action to mobilize for peace.

For Qatar, peace lies at the heart of its diplomatic and humanitarian identity. From hosting international negotiations to supporting conflict-stricken communities, Qatar has positioned itself as a bridge-builder in some of the world’s most complex crises — with Gaza being a key focus.

Qatar as a Global Mediator

Doha has become a trusted platform for international peace talks, facilitating dialogue in conflicts from Afghanistan to Sudan. Qatar’s neutral stance, openness to all parties, and emphasis on dialogue have made it a credible mediator that the global community turns to in times of tension.

Focus on Gaza

Qatar has been deeply engaged in efforts to support peace and stability in Gaza, both diplomatically and through humanitarian action.

  • Diplomacy: Qatar has worked with international partners to mediate ceasefires and reduce escalations, ensuring that channels of communication remain open even in times of crisis.
  • Humanitarian aid: Through the Qatar Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza, the nation funds rebuilding projects, hospitals, schools, and provides financial assistance to families.
  • Long-term support: By investing in education and healthcare, Qatar empowers Palestinian youth and communities, offering them hope and tools for a more stable future.

Global Humanitarian Contributions

Qatar’s commitment to peace extends across the globe. Organizations such as Qatar Charity and the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) deliver aid to refugees, displaced families, and disaster-hit areas worldwide. In the recent years Qatar has provided aid and relief to disaster-stricken areas of Sudan, Syria, Somalia, Djibouti, Mauritania and Ghana, helping over 59 million people worldwide.

Through these efforts, Qatar demonstrates that peace is not limited to negotiations but is also rooted in compassion and support for those most in need.

Peaceful Coexistence at Home

With over 100 nationalities living and working together, Qatar itself is a perfect example of peaceful coexistence and harmony. This is hugely supported by initiatives of the Qatar National Vision 2030 which emphasizes inclusivity, tolerance and community development.

Education & Protection in Conflict Zones

Qatar has made education protection a top priority through its support for initiatives like the Education Above All Foundation (EAA). The EAA has implemented projects in dozens of conflict-affected countries, enabling millions of children to return to school despite the destruction of educational infrastructure.

In 2019, Qatar submitted the draft resolution that led to the UN General Assembly unanimously designating September 9 as the International Day to Protect Education from Attack. This resolution calls for the international community to safeguard students affected by armed conflict and to ensure quality education in safe environments.

Dialogue for Peace

Institutions like Qatar Foundation and events such as the Doha Forum create platforms where global thinkers, leaders, and youth engage in discussions about pressing challenges. Education and dialogue are seen as powerful tools to build understanding and prevent conflict, shaping future generations as advocates for peace.

A Shared Responsibility

As the world observes the International Day of Peace, Qatar’s efforts — from mediating conflicts and supporting Gaza to promoting inclusivity at home — highlight the many dimensions of peacebuilding. But promoting peace does not stop at national borders.

While governments and mediators play their part, the call for peace also extends to communities and individuals. The message of International Day of Peace is clear: building peace requires compassion, solidarity, and action at all levels.

As individuals, we can nurture peace in everyday life by practicing tolerance, respect, and harmony with others by embracing different cultures, beliefs, and perspectives as part of one human family.

At 12 Noon local time, take a moment to pause and reflect, joining millions across the globe in a Minute of Silence for Peace.
