If you have been to Damascus, Syria, before, you may have wandered around and experienced the sights and smells of its famous market — Souq Al Hamediya.

A smaller version of the world famous market has been set up at the Museum of Islamic Arts (MIA) in Doha, as part of the Syria Matters Exhibition.

The Syrian-themed exhibition is being held as part of MIA’s 10th-anniversary celebrations, reported The Peninsula.

The historical market in Damascus, which is a huge draw for both Syrians and international tourists alike, dates back to more than 100 years.

It comprises hundreds of stalls selling all kinds of items from clothes and perfumes to spices and textiles to antiques and souvenirs.

Many of the things at the MIA’s version of the Souq has been brought down from Damascus and it adds a great layer to the ongoing exhibition.

More than 30 stalls have been put up in the Souq, which is located right next to the museum where the Syria Matters exhibition is ongoing.

A wide array of Syrian products, including clothes, embroideries, antiques, furniture, carpets, lamps, Syrian glass, Arabic coffee pots, swords, toys, food, nuts and sweets, can be purchased from the shops.

Syria’s famous pounded ice cream Booza, is available at the Souq, as are juices, sold by a seller adorned in traditional clothes.

The Souq, which is open every day from 2pm to 10pm until December 23, introduces visitors to the prominent Souq Al Hamediya in the ancient walled city of Damascus, which has not yet been affected by the civil war.

The Syria Matters exhibition features over 120 objects and will be on at MIA’s Special Exhibitions Gallery until April 30.
