Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the UAE were on high alert on Monday as loud bangs, explosions, and repeated air raid sirens were reported across the Gulf.
Meanwhile, Iran launched fresh attacks on US assets in the region, and Israel pressed an offensive against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon that has already killed dozens and wounded scores.
Here is a look at today's happenings around the GCC and wider Middle East.
Loud bangs reported in Doha
About half a dozen loud bangs have been heard in Doha, the capital of Qatar, indicating that Iranian attacks in the Gulf region are continuing. Residents reported the sounds over the city as tensions remain high across the Gulf.
Sirens and debris incidents in Kuwait
In Kuwait, another round of air raid sirens were reported, marking at least the third time alarms have sounded in the country in recent hours. Authorities earlier said that Kuwait’s air defences had successfully intercepted a ‘majority’ of drones that approached the capital during the latest wave of attacks.
A witness quoted by Reuters said smoke was seen rising from near the US embassy in Kuwait, following the siren alerts.
Separately, the official Kuwait News Agency reported that debris fell in the Mina Al Ahmadi refinery near Kuwait City, causing minor injuries to two workers. The incident occurred amid ongoing Iranian attacks on US assets in the Gulf.
Sirens and explosions in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi
In Bahrain, the Ministry of Interior announced that it had activated air raid alerts and urged residents to move to the nearest safe location as a precaution.
In the United Arab Emirates, reports indicate that explosions have been heard in Abu Dhabi, the country’s capital, as the broader regional confrontation continues.
Israel launches more attacks on Lebanon
The Israeli military said it has begun ‘striking additional targets’ belonging to the Hezbollah armed group in several areas of Lebanon. According to the statement, the targets include weapons warehouses and other facilities linked to Hezbollah.
“We have launched an offensive campaign against Hezbollah,” Israel’s army chief of staff Eyal Zamir was quoted as saying.
Lebanese authorities say Israeli air attacks on Lebanon have so far killed at least 31 people and wounded 149 others, as hostilities intensify along the Israel–Lebanon front.
