Marking another leap toward excellence in healthcare in Qatar, Her Excellency the Minister of Public Health Dr Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari officially inaugurated the expanded Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at the Hamad General Hospital (HGH).
The inauguration of the expanded SICU signifies the completion of the surgical facility which was officially opened in 2016 by HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.
The upgraded facility will help reduce waiting times for patients required to undergo surgical procedures. It will help a greater number of patients to receive the urgent care they need, including those undergoing emergency and elective surgery.

The state-of-the-art SICU offers a higher level of care in contrast to a standard ICU, so patients who have had more complex surgeries can receive the highest standard of post-operative care from specialist staff.
The SICU also caters to severely ill patients who require frequent monitoring and potential intervention or ventilation.
Since the unit was established in 2016, its capacity has almost doubled with the number of beds increasing from 15 to 27.
The SICU is directly linked to both the HGH Operating Theater Suites and the new Surgical Specialty Center.
It has four isolation rooms, including three negative pressure rooms, and family waiting rooms.

“The new surgical services facility at HGH has helped meet the growing demand for high-quality surgical care in Qatar and ensure that we stay ahead of demand for these services. This most recent expansion of our SICU will help achieve this aim so we can continue to provide the very best care for surgical patients for many years to come,” Dr Al Kuwari said.
The expansion of HGH’s surgical services is part of an ambitious plan to increase capacity and enhance the hospital’s surgical capabilities, mentioned HMC Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Abdulla al Ansari.
“The surgical services facility houses 20 surgical theaters, a 19-bed Trauma Intensive Care Unit, and real-time imaging through CT, MRI, Brain Lab, and Artis Zeego imaging technology. It also features a da Vinci Xi surgical robot used for specialist and general surgeries,” he highlighted.
