According to the academic policy passed in 2021 to make Arabic and Islamic studies compulsory in schools, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education has started to implement this decision starting the academic year 2022-2023.

Considering the fact that 173 kindergartens are operating in the country, whereas the number of private schools and Kindergartens has reached up to 338, this decision comes as a bid to provide necessary solutions, if needed, for the success of the education curriculum. The subjects include Islamic studies, Arabic, and also Qatar history.

“This is the first academic year from when it is mandatory for private kindergartens to teach Arabic language and Islamic studies,” said Assistant Undersecretary for Private Education Affairs at the Ministry, Omar Abdul Aziz Al Naama.

Previously, Arabic and Islamic studies were taught from grade 1 to grade 12, and Qatar history from Grade 9. Introducing these subjects to earlier stages will only help in instilling the national identity and religious values in students at an early age. It is further emphasized that Ministry officials will be visiting private kindergartens to ensure the implementation of the decision and evaluate the outcome.

“170 private education centers are offering several educational and training programs. As per the latest statistics, private schools and kindergartens have over 211,000 students enrolled,” said Al Naama. He said the Ministry has issued licenses for eight new private schools to meet the demand in coming years.

As per Al Naama, the private education sector at the Ministry is already working on implementing several initiatives to improve the quality of education in private schools.

He said the initiatives announced by the Ministry this year include ‘My values define my identity, ‘Strengthening national identity' and the ‘Ethical charter’. It was further added that there is a comprehensive system of evaluation for all initiatives in private schools, measuring the impact of these initiatives on students, and taking into account the rights and duties of school operators, directors, and boards of trustees.
