Under a new initiative launched by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), the prices of fish and seafood in Qatar will be published in a daily bulletin, following an auction supervised by the Ministry.

The mandatory bulletin will set the maximum prices of fish and seafood and regulate their sale.

In a statement yesterday, the ministry said the initiative seeks to prevent unjustified price increases while cracking down on monopolistic practices and ensuring consumers’ right to purchase goods at reasonable prices.

The Ministry said it will release the price bulletin from Tuesday morning.

The initiative comes within the framework of the ministry's role in overseeing and regulating markets in line with its jurisdiction and taking the necessary measures to protect consumers, combat commercial fraud, promote competition and prevent monopolistic practices, according to the Ministry's statement.

The initiative makes it obligatory for retailers to place a label in a prominent place indicating the type and selling price of each type of fish and seafood.

The retailers are now allowed to charge prices higher than those set in the daily price bulletin and are required to only sell healthy and consumable fish.

The Ministry also warned traders against taking any measures or actions aimed at raising fish prices while committing to providing additional services at the prices specified in the bulletin.

The initiative further stresses on the importance of abiding by the maximum prices set by the Ministry every day.

According to MoCI, the sellers should ensure the daily bulletin is displayed in a prominent and clear place and provide the buyer with a detailed invoice.

The MoCI has advised buyers to tour the market for sufficient time before purchasing the appropriate goods at the right price.

The Ministry has also asked buyers to examine the quality of fish and seafood on sale and refrain from buying fish at prices higher than those set in the daily price bulletin.
